Active identification
Determined name:
Juncus polyanthemus Buchenau
Determiner:
Paul Champion
Identification date:
2010-03-21 (Verbatim: 21 Mar 2010)
Preferred name:
Juncus polyanthemus Buchenau
Division:
Magnoliophyta
Class:
Liliopsida
Order:
Juncales
Family:
Juncaceae
Identification type:
Determination
Note:
The 'Broadlands' farm plant from Pohangina Valley appears to be identical to material I collected last year at two Northland lakes (Swan on the Pouto Peninsula and Waiporohita on Karikari Peninsula - in Wells and Champion 2009 Northland Lakes Ecological Study). They key out in Kirschner's treatise on Juncaceae to be Juncus polyanthemus (an Australian and New Caledonian plant previously misapplied to J. edgariae and J. usitatus - see Flora of NZ V2). It is quite likely to be self-introduced on ducks feet. Lake Waiporohita also has a couple of new records of spp. from Australia; Alternanthera denticulata and Gratiola pedunculata.
Other identifications
Identification
Determined name:
Juncus aff. pallidus
Determiner:
C.C. Ogle
Identification date:
2009-02-27 (Verbatim: 27 Feb 2009)
Preferred name:
Juncus pallidus R.Br.
Active:
no
Identification type:
Determination
Note:
Robust nature and continuous pith suggests Juncus pallidus, though the stems of 'true' J. pallidus are thicker and more grey-green. The heads with spaced out, not clustered, fruits resemble those of J. sarophorus, but the fruits are smaller and the stems are thicker and have continuous pith. In fruit size and distribution along the inflorescence stalks, plus the continuous pith, it resembles J. effuses (which grows with it at Pohangina) but the inflorescence branches do not curve down, and the stems are much taller, less shiny and harder in texture.
