Notes:
Abundant at interface between frost flat and upland Podocarp forest. Growing on skeletal soil overlying Taupo Pumice (186 A.D. ejecta), in association with dense Dracophyllum subulatum. Stout, columnar tree c. 8m tall, 0.8m d.h.b. Trunk scarcely exposed, clad in stringy, often inrolled, pinkish-grey bark, this exfoliating in irregular, "wood shaving" like peels, covering the base of the tree in a deep mulch. Branches numerous, upswept, broom like (fastigiate), overlapping with next tier of branches. Leaves bronze green, shortly oblanceolate to obovate, glabrescent, branchlet hairs patent (divergent), copious, curled at apices (40× magnification), inflorescences corymbiform, pherophylls spathulate, margins ciliate, flowers dense, spiralling around branchlets, petals white with yellow oil glands, receptacle dark red (or crimson-red). The distinctive inland unnamed entity within the Kunzea ericoides (A.Rich.) Joy Thomps.
