Habitat:
This is a flat mossy/scrubby area on trail from Waihohonu hut to Desert road (closer to the hut). These are the GPS coordinates for the individual hybrids collected for the population AFLP analysis. Gaultheria macrostigma fruiting rare. Fruits picked off already by animals? The plant was found in a shady area, under shrubs, nested in the vegetation. Hybrids more often in open exposed areas.
Abundance:
Rare
Notes:
This is the parent voucher for the AFLP population analysis of putative hybrids between Gaultheria colensoi and G. macrostigma. This macrostigma has broader leaves than those of the specimen from Peter's Pool, Franz Josef Glacier. Fruiting specimens very rare, though hybrids appear to be common. ~15 cm. White berry, calyx green, base of calyx fleshy (lobes at base). Some dried fruit present. Solitary fruits.
