Isolectotype of Ulota viridis var. adpressa Malta, Acta Horti Bot. Univ. Latv. 7: 22 (1933). Lectotype designated as H-Br 4337002
There is no reason given in Malta’s protologue to prefer any of the three published syntypes (all W. Bell collections from Otago) of this name as a lectotype. However, in TWN Beckett’s herbarium (at CHR), where the bulk of W. Bell’s New Zealand mosses reside, an ample duplicate of the Mt. Bonpland collection (herb. Beckett 899) bears the annotation, in Brotherus’ script “Ulota appressa Mitt in litt. ad W. Bell 25 April 1829”. The fact that Mitten saw a portion of the Mt Bonpland collection makes it the obvious choice for a lectotype of Malta’s varietal name.
It is clear that Malta (1933, p. 24) was uncertain about the value of the variety adpressa even prior to its publicaton. The primary distinguishing character that he used to distinguish the variety is the length of the exostome teeth, which he considered to be “shorter than in the type” and “usually splitting afterwards.” In the lectype material the exostome teeth are between 240–270 µm long and not divided. There are within the observed variability of U. viridis s.s. I consider the var. adpressa to be unworthy of recognition.
