Herb. W. Martin 4216.21 (Especially troublesome are epiphytic collections (e.g. W. Martin 19 Jan. 1944 ex Halpin's Creek, Arthurs Pass) which appear to show a transition from the robust stems similar to terrestrial forms of Hypum cupressiforme to the delicate and filiform stems representative of H. cupressiforme var. filiforme. Such material would suggest that the present variety is unworthy of recognition. However, such material is rare and insufficient evidence is available to reject the taxonomic interpretations of Ando.
