321.2 (This specimen was one of five filed under the label "Intermediates" as of 31 Aug. 2000. It was presumably isolated by J. Lewinsky (in 1981?) as an intermediate between Orthotrichum cupulatum Brid. and its variety austro-cupulatum. There is a large proportion of the Castle Hill specimens of O. cupulatum that do not fit convincingly into either of Lewinsky's recognized varieties. With so many intermediates, I am inclined to think that the var. austo-cupulatum should not be recognized. Curatorial Note: Allan Fife August 2000) ( Herb Martin?? Probably a duplicate of Sainsbury 4081. The setae here are longer (0.9 mm exclusive of vaginula) than the other dupl. of Sainsbury 4081 that I have seen (also CHR). The old capsules here have a tendancy to become exserted. Allan Fife August 2000)
