Notes:
Herb, erect, probably annual; stems to c. 80 cm high, all vegetative parts and phyllaries densely pale spiny. Leaf midrib pale. Capitula nodding at anthesis. Phyllaries ± purple towards base, especially inner ones, and on adaxial surface. Flower heads to 6 cm across; i.e. on primary stem; florets pinkish-purple, incl. styles.
