Habitat:
Basalt bedrock at margin of swift, tannin-rich river with rather open bed in deeply incised valley; Cornyocarpus laevigatum - Dicksonia - Cyathea - Myrsine ?coxii - Pseudopanax chathamica - Macropiper excelsum dominated forest over peat soil & basalt bedrock.
Microhabitat:
On damp, partially shaded basalt.

Hypnodendron from c. 1 m distant enclosed. Occasional at this site, but not seen previously in eight days on Chatham Island.
