Notes:
Rhizomatous plant with long black wiry (bootlace) rhizomes. Stems rush-like, i.e. leafless, hollow with thin walls, to about 2m high and 1.2cm diameter; grooves usually 30-40; branches small and short, like miniature main stems. Sheaths on young shoots pink and mauvish-brown with black teeth, on mature shoots sheaths with basal black band and rest of sheath rather silvery except for the black teeth, these however being eventually shed. No fertile parts seen.
