Clumping-forming bamboo with culms to c.3m high; rhizomes running shortly (not invasive in surrounding vegetation). Culms flattened on one side except near base, becoming yellow in second year. Culm sheaths green, often flushed purple. Branches stiffly spreading. Leaves glaucous beneath and above.
