Habitat:
Steep west-facing slope in Macaronesian scrub. +/- Adventive.
Notes:
Arborescent plant with stout trunk (not coll. but l0-l5mm thick and c.40 cm. high). Leaves in terminal rosettes, the only rosettes present being on a few lateral sub-inflorescense branches and in shade; hence rosettes very open. Lvs. rather etiolated, to c.8.5x2cm, obovate-spathulate, green thin & flatpurplish margins at distal end, apex mucronulate. Infl axis to c. 40cm tall; bracts deciduous, almost the only A. arboreum out in fl now. Infl c. 20x14cm, ± ovoid with rounded apex, minutely puberulent. Fls secund, mostly over by this date. Calyx lobes c. 1.5mm long, broadly triangular. Petals 9-10in no. golden 6-7x c. 2mm, narrowly oblong-elliptic/linear-elliptic subacute. Stamens 4.5-6mm long, yellow; inner whorl slightly longer than outer whorl, sometimes the reverse. Scales ± rectangular & emarginate, translucent, c. 0.5mm long. Carpels c.5mm long incl. stylespale yellow.
