I have never seen this fern near Westport; the nearest area where is grows, as far as I have noticed is between Heaphy's Coal Mine and Inangahua in the Buller Gorge. It has a solid smooth fibrous trunk, very massive, and there seems no doubt it is Dicksonia fibrosa.
