Supplementary remarks:
Mr. H. Carse, 7 Moata Road, Ellerslie, AUCKLAND Dear Mr. Carse, First I must explain that the delay in answering your letter is due to the fact that I have been in the South Island for the past month. I have been carefully through the specimens of Leptospermum sinclairii and ericoides in the Museum and find a multitude of forms which may be arranged under four or five types. Of these Sinclairii is one, and I cannot see any reason why it should be treated as distinct species any more than lineatum or the small-leaved form from the thernal district. Sinclairii is represented in the Petrie collection by a specimen marked type. It is evidently a portion of Kirk's original specimens. It has broad silky leaves, mucronate; flowers in clusters with silky calyxtubes and pedicels. There is nothing else exactly like it, but Cheeseman's specimens from the Three Kings come nearest but have narrower less hairy leaves and the flowers are disposed singly on the branchlets. As the characters used by Kirk to define his species are found more or less developed in all the forms of ericoides it is necessary to decide those that are essential to the form collected by Kirk. The clustered flowers, and long pedicels are found in the glabrous forms while the sunken capsules does not seem a very good character so that the broad hairy leaves remain as the distinguishing character. Thus defined Sinclairii would include some plants from Great Barrier and all specimens I have seen from the Three Kings. The remaining specimens including all you sent down would fall into one of the forms of ericoides though admittedly they may differ from Sinclairii only in being less hairy. Most of them have the leaves much narrower or differ in other respects. Your specimens I would classify as follows:- 924/1.5. lineatum. The capsule may be as hairy as in Sinclairii. 925/1.5.7.9.10. ericoides. Leaves narrower and less hairy than the type of Sinclairii. 925/13. ericoides. So included by Petrie. 925/6. ericoides. A distinct form with small flowers and short obtuse leaves. 925/2.4.11.12. lineatum. Specimens returned under seperate cover. Yours faithfully, W.R.B. Oliver Dominion Museum, Wellington, New Zealand
