Specimen notes
Herbarium history:
Transferred from Canterbury Museum, Christchurch (CANTY) May 1975. Index 28.1.3.1.
Supplementary remarks:
The narrow-lanceolate leaves with sharply acute apices, hairs on leaf margin and midrib (but not across whole lamina), elongated "monadic" inflorescence, acute calyies, small petals and more numerous stamens are all features of the Three Kings endemic Kunzea NOT K. sinclairii. Thomas Cheeseman (whose handwriting is on the label) collected this entity from Great Island in 1887 & 1889 and he called it Leptospermum sinclairii. Cheeseman did not visit Great Barrier Island - I have no idea who A. Kane is but this gathering is definitely from the Three Kings - perhaps specimens and labels got disassociated before mounting? Either way Cheeseman's lebel does not match the specimen but it does fit his concept of this species.
