An escape from cultivation in one or two places. The fruit contains Oxalic acid, whitl the bark & stems yield the bitter principle Berberine.

These speciemsn are the basis for G.M. Thomson's record (Trans.N.Z. Inst., 7: 1875: 372) for Berberis vulgaris L. from "Abandoned gardens in the Taieri Plain".
They constitute the first record for New Zealand of Ribes odoratum Wendl.
